Putt for Dough keeps score and works out the money. Here’s everything it keeps, where, and who sees it.

On your phone

Your rounds, cups and team games, the players you add (names, handicaps, Venmo and Cash App names), your courses and your usual games are saved on this phone so they’re there next time. Clearing the browser’s data for the site removes them.

Online, for your group

A round, cup or team game you start is kept online so your group can follow it: its name, the course, the players’ names, handicaps and pay names, the scores and the bets. Anyone with its link can see it and keep score. Nobody can search for it or list them, and the phone that started it can delete it for everyone.

Counts, never names

To see whether the app is catching on, it adds one to a few counters: rounds and cups started and finished, phones new to the app or using it each week, friends who open a round’s or a cup’s link and those who go on to start their own, which state a round was started in (a guess from the phone’s internet address, never GPS), what kind of site sent a new phone here (a search, Facebook, a link we posted), and screens that broke. Never names, scores or which round or cup.

Where you are

Only when you tap Courses near me, or your phone already lets the app know, to list the courses within 25 miles. It stays on your phone: the app reads its course map from its own site, and a search by name sends only a rough area, about 7 miles across. It’s never saved, sent with a round or counted.

Finding a course

The course names you search for go through the app’s site to OpenGolfAPI, which has free scorecards, and to GolfCourseAPI when OpenGolfAPI doesn’t have the whole card. They’re told the name and nothing else, never where you are.

Ideas or problems

What you write, and an email or phone number if you leave one, go to the person who makes the app and nobody else. Leave the contact out if you don’t need an answer.

Money

The app never holds or moves money. Pay buttons open your own Venmo or Cash App with the amount filled in, and the app never sees the payment.

No ads

There are no ads. The site runs on Cloudflare, rounds are kept with Google’s Firebase, and the lettering comes from Google Fonts, so those companies see your phone’s requests the way any website’s hosts do. Cloudflare also counts visits to the site’s pages for us: which pages are read, the sites that sent people, their countries and kinds of devices, and how fast the pages load. It uses no cookies, keeps nothing on your phone and doesn’t follow anyone from site to site, and we only ever see totals.

Removing something

A round’s menu takes it off your phone, and whoever started it can delete it there for everyone. For anything else, or a question, use Ideas or problems.
